Raising the standard

These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the word “tribulation”? I believe Christians down the ages have related this word which Jesus mentioned to various things at various times. We take comfort, however, in what Jesus said in the same breath – “I have overcome the world”.

To each one of us, coming tribulation may mean different things as well. Some of us may be concerned about the economy, or political development, or education, or security and many other things. Whatever it may be, the Word of God speaks comfort to His people. Since Jesus has overcome the world, we can enter into His victory over many troubles and tribulation.

During the times of the Prophet Isaiah, God’s people were faced with tremendous challenges and pressure as well. The Lord spoke these words to them:

So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun;
When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.
The Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,”
says the Lord. (Isaiah 59:19-20)

The victory over the world has indeed been won by Jesus, and it belongs to God’s people. It is however, the Spirit of God who will enforce this victory. There are 2 things we need to do in order to execute this victory against the enemy who is behind coming tribulation: to have a spirit of repentance; and to pray earnestly with fervent and sacrifices. During this season of Lent, let us devote our time and effort, making sacrifices of time and convenience, to seek God’s face and pray that the Spirit of God will indeed unleash the victory of the Cross over the enemy.
